http://sgm.edgeboss.net/download/sgm/teaching/worshipgod2009/wg09-session4.mp3

1.We need the church because it’s God’s workmanship(1 Cor. 12:18-21; Eph. 3:10)

2.We need the church because we need to be cared(shepherded, watched over, kept) for(vs 24-26)

3.We need to be equipped and matured for the Christian life.(Ephesians 4:11-16)

4.We need the church because we need God’s grace(1 Peter 4:10)

5.We need the church because we need God’s love(1 John 4:14-21; John 13:35)

Spend time in prayer about what you have just heard.

Day Two: Read 1 Corinthians 12. What gifts has God given you that you have been neglecting to use for His glory? Write down some practical ways that you can use these gifts to serve others. Are there ways that you should be serving at church? Are there ministry opportunities that God wants you to be involved in?

Spend time in prayer and seek God’s guidance about what your gifts are and how He wants you to use them.

Day Three: Review the five points above from the sermon that you listened to. Take each one and write down one way that it applies to your life.

Find two note cards. Use one to write a thank you note to someone who has showed God’s design in the body of Christ specifically to you by caring for you, shepherding you, and spiritually watching over over.

Use the second note card to obey God’s design for the body of Christ by writing an encouraging note to someone that God has placed on your heart to minister to as you have been ministered to.

Spend time in prayer thanking the Lord and praying for the people that you have just written to.

Day Four: Read these verses-1 Peter 4:10: Ephesians 4:1-16; Phil. 2:1-11)

Spend time in prayer. Ask the Lord to show you where you need to be humbled in reaching out to others at church. Do you wait for people to come and talk to you? Are you intentional in pursuing God honoring relationships with others around you. “Renounce self reliance and pride. Humble yourself and care for others.”(Thabiti Anyabwile). Ask the Lord how He wants you to do this.

Day Five: “Church is absolutely essential”.

“It is pride to think that the church is an optional extra”.

“ A man who loves God, loves the church”.

“To reject what God has designed for His glory and our good, is spiritual suicide. To reject the church is to take your own spiritual life”.

The Scripture that you have been reading and the quotes above are some that God has been using in my life to show me the importance of the body of Christ. What is something that God has shown you this week from the sermon and this study on “Humility and the Body of Christ”? Please share what you have learned by using the comment block on our blog.

Spend time in prayer.

  2. I am not really sure if this is what you were looking for but, I was really convicted this week some very jealous attitudes in my heart towards some people in the body of Christ. I realized that instead of seeking to encourage others and build them up, I was struggling with being jealous and discontent because they were better at something than I am, or someone else was spending more time with others...etc. Anyways, God really revealed to me how I was not fulfilling my role as a part of the body of Christ by being jealous, and showed me that I was being very selfish in my attitudes and thoughts, instead of seeking to selflessly love and encourage others. So yeah, I am not sure if that is what you were getting at, but that is one thing that I have been convicted and repentent about.
Thanks for writing this lesson Amy P. It was great:)

  3. Being reminded of the invention of the church as being Christ's essential foundation for building His Kingdom, saving souls and bringing glory to His name, is humbling. We need each other to be the church. We cannot be the church individually. thanks for this ames.
